Though it had been Kennedy which had committed the USA to landing a man on the moon, it befell newly-elected President Richard Nixon to herald the heroes in their achievements. His famed telephone conversation with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin as they stood beside the US flag on the lunar surface caught NASA by surprise, so they simply patched the US leader through to the explorers via their internal comms systems. Nixon was there to welcome the astronauts home, too, albeit through the window of their new home for a week after splashdown in the Pacific, a mobile quarantine facility aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Hornet.
