
Of all the Apollo missions, Apollo 8 was perhaps the most dangerous testing, for the first time, whether it was possible to use the moon’s gravity to ‘slingshot’ a spacecraft back to earth. To achieve this, astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders had to fly round the dark side of the moon, losing contact completely with mission control for an excruciating 32 minutes.
