Apollo 11, riding a pillar of flame, rises to clear its mobile launcher at pad 39A, blasting off at 9:32am at the Kennedy Space Centre Florida, initiating man’s first lunar landing mission. The Saturn V rocket, the largest machine ever made by man, carried 5million pounds of fuel and weighed over 2900 tons. It would take the astronauts only three bone-jangling minutes to reach outer space, by which time they would be travelling at 5300 miles per hour. Ahead of them lay another three days and 250,000 miles of space flight before reaching their destination – the moon’s Sea of Tranquility.
