Of all the Apollo missions, Apollo 8 was perhaps the most dangerous testing, for the first time, whether it was possible to use the moon’s gravity to ‘slingshot’ a spacecraft back to earth. To achieve this, astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders had to fly round the dark side of the moon, losing contact completely with mission control for an excruciating 32 minutes. As they rounded the moon’s orbit, just 60 miles above the surface, they were the first men in history to witness what became known as ‘earthrise’, a distant view of the blue planet as it emerged above the lunar horizon.
