During the Gemini 4 mission in June 1965, Ed White became the first American to walk in space. On the mission’s third orbit of the Earth, White opened the hatch and used the hand-held manoeuvring gun to push himself out of the capsule.
White’s walk started over the Pacific Ocean and lasted 23 minutes, ending over the Gulf of Mexico. The visor of White’s helmet is gold-plated to protect him from the unfiltered rays of the sun.
